Dan Stiff is the ardent traveler. Four decades
ago he told his Father, “There has to be some
place besides Cottage Grove, Oregon and I’m
going to find it.” He did. This sense of
adventure has led to travels in over 50
countries on 5 continents.
Along with the travels, many varied occupations have crossed his path;
Commercial Fisherman in Alaska, Mill Worker, Ranch Hand, Rock Quarry
Blaster, Lumber Yard Manager, and Ski Patrolman in Oregon, Semi Pro
Football Player in Japan, Rafting Guide in Colorado, Curriculum
Developer and College Professor.
The Vietnam War
introduced Dan to Asia.
With a draft notice looming
over his head he joined the
Navy near the end of the
conflict which led to a 26
year career.
Dan holds a B.S. degree in Workforce Education and Development from Southern Illinois University, a
Masters in Organizational Leadership from Chapman University, and his PhD work is in Cultural Studies
at Capella University.
Spending the majority of his 18 years of sea duty
on small ships home ported in Japan and Guam
fueled his passion for adventure. He spent his
time seeking out the most exotic locations to
play golf, finding the best diving spot, floating
white water runs through jungle canyons, climbing
the next mountain, finding the best trek, or just
the thrill of riding cross country on local
transportation.
Besides the personal side of these adventures, he became known as the, “Maven of adventure in
Asia.” His entire career involved, in some way, introducing others to the thrills that await you around
the next corner. The Navy recognized this and for years would fly Dan ahead of the ships to set up
tours, hotels, golf, sporting events, cultural and humanitarian exchange programs for thousands of
Sailors.
Dan and his wife Christine, of 31 years, live in Colorado
Springs. When not traveling they enjoy music festivals,
white water rafting, skiing, hiking, and a great cup of
coffee with friends. They have 2 daughters, Camille and
Sheena, and a grandson Brandon that started skiing a
month before his 2nd birthday. A future adventurer
and guide for Idlewild for sure.
